Covid-19: Fiji death toll continues to rise as 1057 new cases confirmed

Fiji records 1057 new cases of Covid-19, 12 more deaths

Fiji's confirmed Covid-19 positive cases shot back to four digits with the country's Health Ministry reporting 1057 new infections in the 24 hours to 8am yesterday.

That compares to 715 cases and 11 deaths in the previous 24-hour period.

The government also confirmed 12 more deaths between 24-27 July.

Health Secretary James Fong said on Wednesday night all but two of the victims were unvaccinated.

Seven of the 12 victims had presented to medical facilities in severe respiratory distress, three died at home and two were declared dead on arrival at the hospital, Dr Fong said.

He said 144 of the latest cases were from the Western Division and 913 cases from the Central Division.

* A 44-year-old woman from Drasa was declared dead on arrival by the attending medical officer at the Lautoka Hospital emergency department on 24 July. Dr Fong said she died at home or on her way to the hospital.

* A 73-year-old woman from Lovu was also declared dead on arrival by the attending medical officer at Lautoka Hospital on 26 July. This means that she died at home or on her way to the hospital.

* A 52-year-old woman from Lami near Suva died at home on 27 July.

* A 61-year-old man from Raiwai, Suva, also died at home on 27 July.

* A 69-year-old man from Naitasiri died at home on 26 July.

* A 75-year-old man from Togalevu presented to a medical facility in severe respiratory distress on 27 July. A medical team brought him to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital on 23 July. His condition worsened at the hospital and he died four days later.

* An 83-year-old man from Nadawa, Nasinu presented to the CWM Hospital in severe respiratory distress on 19 July. His condition worsened at the hospital and he died six days later.

* A 74-year-old woman from Narere, Nasinu, presented to the CWM Hospital in severe respiratory distress on 26 July. Her condition worsened at the hospital and she died eight days later.

* An 87-year-old man from Tacirua Village presented to the CWM Hospital in severe respiratory distress on 20 July. Her condition worsened at the hospital and she died eight days later.

* A 61-year-old woman from Samabula, Suva, presented to the CWM Hospital in severe respiratory distress on 19 July. Her condition worsened at the hospital and she died eight days after admission.

* A 51-year-old man also from Samabula presented to the CWM Hospital in severe respiratory distress on 20 July. His condition worsened at the hospital and he died seven days later.

* A 70-year-old woman from Tamavua, Suva, was taken from the home and brought to CWM Hospital on 24 July in severe respiratory distress. Her condition worsened at the hospital and she died three days later. Her family reported that she had a cough and shortness of breath two days earlier.
