Fiji's PM rejects allegations he snubbed military

06:50 am on 6 June 2005

The Fiji Prime Minister's Office has described the military commander, Commodore Bainimarama, as "idiosyncratic."

The statement follows Commodore Bainimarama's accusation on Fiji TV that Laisenia Qarase had insulted the military.

He acused Mr Qarase of walking out in the middle of a reception during a parade to welcome home 1,500 soldiers who have seen service in East Timor..

But the chief executive of the Prime Minister's Office, Jioji Kotobalavu, said Mr Qarase and other ministers left at the end of their part in Friday's programme.

Mr Kotobalavu said this was part of the agreement with the organising committee and Commodore Bainimarama's allegations against the prime minister were totally without foundation or justification.
