Nauru Supreme Court says suspension lawful

The Supreme Court of Nauru says the suspension of five members of parliament earlier this year was lawful.

Kieren Keke, Roland Kun, Matthew Batsiua were suspended in May, followed by former president Sprent Dabwido, and Squire Jeremiah, in June.

The MPs filed legal action in the Supreme Court challenging the suspension, arguing it was unlawful and breached the constitution.

The Supreme Court full bench ruled that parliament should be allowed to conduct its proceedings as it deems fit and if an MP is unhappy with a decision then he or she should seek redress through the parliamentary appeal process.

A majority of the judges also ruled the withholding of the MPs' salaries and allowances while they are suspended is lawful.
