Cordons have now been lifted in the Taranaki town of Hāwera after a gas leak.

Just before 10.30am, police said emergency services were responding to the incident at the intersection of Union Street and Nelson Street in Hāwera.

Cordons were in place on a number of streets intersecting Union Street, including High Street, Grey Street and Wellington Street, as well as near Countdown and the intersection of Nelson and Princes streets.

Police said people within these cordons were evacuated as a precaution and others were asked to avoid the area.

In an update after 11am, police said cordons have been lifted and there was no ongoing threat to the public.
