A man who was driving on the road as motorbikes drove by, got out of his vehicle south of Rangiriri and was attacked.

It was earlier reported that the man had been dragged from his vehicle in the incident, however police now say that did not occur.

"We now understand he stopped his vehicle and got out of it immediately prior to being assaulted by a group of people thanks to witnesses who have come forward," Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said in a statement.

The man is in a critical but stable condition in intensive care in Hamilton.

Police said no firearms were involved in the incident.

Pitkethley said police need the most accurate information possible, from video evidence from the public.

"This helps police ensure that we have the most accurate information of what happened on the Waikato Expressway on Friday 11 March," he said.

Police say any electronic recordings of the event can be uploaded via this link.
