Armed police have arrested a man they say hit an officer with his car in the Far North.

The officer had been speaking to the man about criminal offences in the Kohukohu area when the incident happened at the Hokianga ferry landing about 6.15pm on Monday.

Police say the man left the scene in his vehicle, hitting the officer in the process. The officer suffered cuts and bruises.

Police say the man had what was thought to be a firearms bag and a holster. Officers surrounded a property just after 9.30pm on Monday and he was arrested without incident.

Police are still deciding what charges he will face.
