Extra police have been brought in to help hunt down the people who shot dead a 27-year-old man in Whanganui today.
The police were called to Puriri Street in Castlecliff just before 10am, where the man was killed.
Detective Inspector Ross McKay said extra police had been brought in from Taranaki and the Manawatu to help local officers track down those responsible.
Mr McKay said the offenders and victim were known to each other and the attack was not random.
He said he did not believe there was any risk to the public.
He said the police also understood the parties were involved with gangs, but would not say if that had anything to do with the shooting.
