Twaddle announces retirement from rowing

The former world rowing champion and Olympic medallist Nathan Twaddle has announced his retirement from the sport.

Twaddle, who's 32, recently announced his intention to carry on through to next year's London Olympics after finishing seventh in the men's quad scull at the recent world champs on Lake Karapiro but has had a change of heart.

Twaddle is one of the top performers in New Zealand rowing's recent history, with nine national titles including the single and the pair.

It was in the pair at the 2005 world champs in Japan he teamed up with George Bridgewater to win the world title and then won Olympic bronze in Beijing three years later.

Twaddle says he doesn't feel he has the potential for medal performances in him any more and that while he wanted to compete in London, his ability to push himself has waned.

Twaddle says he won't be lost to the sport as he'll continue his involvement with adapative rowing and also as part of the New Zealand Olympic Committee's athletes commission.
