There are more great white sharks around this season and they're bigger than usual, a Far North charter-boat skipper says.

Rob Parker said there had always been great whites around Houhora harbour in summer and autumn.

But this year with warmer water and plenty of fish about they seemed to be thriving.

"I've had a few do barrel-rolls in front of the boat," he said.

"We've seen them jump out by our famous rock out at Houhora Heads, and our local game-fishing club experienced quite a large shark jumping out of the water, chasing fish."

Mr Parker said the sharks were part of nature and no threat to the fishery or his business, but he wouldn't let his young children swim in the harbour at this time of year.

The Houhora harbour-master is asking people to report any sightings of great whites.
