North Island quakes unrelated to Christchurch - GNS

09:33 am on 6 July 2011

GNS Science says recent North Island earthquakes are unrelated to the ongoing seismic activity in Christchurch.

Three quakes have been felt in the past five days - one in Auckland, one in Hawke's Bay and a magnitude 6.5 quake in Taupo on Tuesday.

GNS says North Islanders should put their minds at rest, because the quakes are just normal seismic activity.

However, seismologist, Brian Ferris says people in Wellington need to remember that they live in a region where a large earthquake is inevitable.
