The man aged in his twenties was reported missing near Lion Rock at Piha beach just after 6pm yesterday.

Another swimmer was pulled from the water and treated at the Piha Surf Club.

The police's Eagle helicopter and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew were also at the scene.

Rescue boats were stood down yesterday due to rough conditions with waves up to 3m and the glare on the water from the low sun.

But police said land-based search teams have been out since 6am today, and it was expected boats would be back out on the water looking for the man from about 10am.
