The 51-year-old was questioned and searched by Customs officers on arrival at Auckland Airport on Wednesday, after spending three weeks in Thailand.

The man appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Friday and the Customs Service said in a statement said further charges were likely.

Customs alleges images were found on a USB storage device and the man's tablet, and that a search of his home uncovered a large number of child sexual abuse images and videos.

Customs investigations manager Bruce Berry said child protection was taken very seriously and Customs had specialist investigators and forensic experts working to combat child sexual exploitation material.
