A man has been seriously injured in a "physical altercation" near Auckland's northwestern motorway.

Police said they were called to the Te Atatū Road on-ramp about 7.40pm Friday after a report of a physical altercation between a group of people.

One man sustained serious injuries.

He was taken to hospital.

"A number of people are now assisting with our enquiries into the circumstances of the incident," police said in a statement.

The road was closed for a time while a scene examination was carried out.
