Nearly 87,000 houses should be built in Auckland over the next eight years without serious risk of overbuilding, according to a new report.
The Westpac study said an extra 7,700 construction workers would be needed to build 10,800 dwellings a year.
It said Auckland was not building enough houses to meet demand but any levels higher than 10,800 would be hard to achieve.
The report said a range of hurdles have to be overcome including more training and supervision of builders, incentives to land owners and developers, and faster planning and consents.
