MetService is forecasting severe northerly gales for the city on Tuesday, with winds reaching 140km/h in exposed places.

Air New Zealand said customers with Wellington flights were strongly recommended to defer non-urgent travel.

Customers due to travel tomorrow who are able to make changes to their booking online will be sent a notification outlining how to change their flight.

Those who cannot make changes to their online booking can contact Air New Zealand via private message on Facebook or Twitter, or by contacting the airline's contact centre.

Customers with online bookings will be able to make these changes via their app or the airline's website without the need to get in touch with Air New Zealand's contact centre.

The airline is also offering fare flexibility for the next three days, where customers with cancelled flights will have the option to transfer their booking to another date, or hold the fare value in credit for up to 12 months for future travel.

The airline said passengers should subscribe to its 'travel alert' service to receive ongoing updates.

Air New Zealand senior manager for customer services and communication Doug Grant said the likely affected flights would be before 9.30am.

The airline's contact centre is experiencing very high call volumes and all customers are kindly asked to defer non-urgent calls.

Mr Grant said so far the affected flights had been jet aircraft due to risk of cross-wind.

The flights that have been cancelled are:

NZ401 and NZ410 Auckland to Wellington and Wellington to Auckland.

NZ405 and NZ412 Auckland to Wellington and Wellington to Auckland.

NZ407 and NZ414 Auckland to Wellington and Wellington to Auckland.

NZ409 and NZ416 Auckland to Wellington and Wellington to Auckland.

NZ680 Dunedin to Wellington.
