A 1.5 percent price hike will be imposed on Wellington public transport users from February next year.
The Greater Wellington Regional Council approved the fare increase after a year which has seen reduced patronage due to Covid-19.
For the past 12 months, there has been a price freeze on tickets.
Transport Committee chair Roger Blakeley said while there had been a rebound in people using public transport, there was the risk of a financial shortfall.
He said with a minor price increase, they would be able to guarantee continued provision of good public transport, without pricing it from those who relied on it the most.
