The Mountain Safety Council is urging caution with more people expected to head into the backcountry this winter.
Chief executive Mike Daisley said there had been an increase in backcountry snowsports equipment being sold.
He said they were preparing for a more extreme avalanche season than usual, with predictions of larger avalanches and ones in places that weren't typically affected.
Daisley said people should check the avalanche advisory forecast, go with someone experienced if they're new, have the right equipment and know how to use it.
He reminded people that a low risk did not mean there was no risk.
