Crashes leave one dead, two injured in Waikato

One person is dead and two others seriously injured after separate crashes in the Waikato this afternoon.

A head-on crash near Ōtorohanga left four people in hospital, while a man died at a motocross event at Leamington, near Cambridge, shortly after midday.

Four people were taken to Waikato Hospital after the crash north of Ōtorohanga.

A Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesperson a car travelling south with one occupant, veered into the path of an oncoming car carrying two adults and two children.

A woman in her 30s and an eight-year-old boy were flown to Waikato Hospital with abdominal and chest injuries. Two others from the vehicle were taken by ambulance.

Earlier, one man died and the helicopter flew another person to hospital with serious injuries after the accident at the motocross event near Cambridge.

Further south, police said the Crown Range Road between Queenstown and Wanaka had been closed due to snow.

Some cars had become stuck but there were no reports of injuries, they said.
