A New Caledonian movement against the high cost of living has decided to downscale its protests planned for today but will continue to pressure the government to act.
The Citizens Association of New Caledonia said it will have just a symbolic presence in Noumea and Bourail while organising more effective and better-coordinated action.
Last week, its representatives quit negotiations with the government after failing to get it to lower fuel prices amid concern over the high cost of food.
The Association, which was formed last year and describes itself as apolitical, said it is campaigning alongside others, like farmers, truckers, and unions, to lower the cost of living.
The Association said it is not acceptable that the general population has to pay up, but multinationals need to act for having triggered this inflation.
It said its next actions will be hard-hitting but peaceful.
Unions also met government leaders last week to raise their concerns and called for a rise in the minimum wage as well as a review of the salary structures.
