Fiji extends flag consultation, more designs on the way

20:37 pm on 30 June 2015

Fiji has extended the consultation period for the country's new flag until the end of year.

The Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama announced plans for a new flag earlier this year, saying he wanted it hoisted on the 45th anniversary of independence in October.

In a statement he has announced the consultations will now be extended until the last day of the year and the new flag design will be considered by Parliament when it convenes next year.

Mr Bainimarama says more choices for the flag will also be offered over the next few months.

A flag design competition resulted in 23 designs offered to the public for feedback.

He says there's been much positive feedback on the new designs but the government recognises people want more time and more designs to consider.

There have been calls for a referendum on the issue and widespread criticism the process of changing the flag has been undemocratic.

The extension follows a weekend poll which found 53 percent of people want the current flag retained.
