Race not over for Solomons coalitions

17:26 pm on 1 December 2014

Coalitions hoping to form the next goverment in Solomon Islands have been told to remain vigilant as the country waits for a date to be set for Prime Ministerial elections.

So far the Solomon Islands People's Coalition made up of four political parties is leading the race and is claiming the allegiance of 29 MPs in the 50 member parliament.

But the Registrar of the Political Parties Commission Calvin Ziru says legislation governing the formation of government does not lock MPs into any party or coalition.

"In the Solomon Islands because of the fluidity and volatility of how coalition groups are actually formed. In the interest of progressing the formation of a government we talked to both the party groups to reinsure, reinforce the strength of their coalition blocks."

Mr Ziru says the commission will meet today with the intention of submitting coalition agreements to the Governer General later this afternoon after which a date for the election of the Prime Minister will be announced and nominations opened.
