Fiji army delegation confirms support for country's President

11:04 am on 29 September 2006

A delegation of senior Fiji military officers has called on their commander in chief, President Iloilo, as tensions rise again between the military and the government.

The Daily Post reports that the delegation, headed by the acting commander, naval Captain, Esala Teleni, reaffirmed their support for President Iloilo, Vice President Madraiwiwi and the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

The military spokesman, Major Neumi Leweni, says the delegation formally told the president that everyone in the military is fully behind Commodore Bainimarama.

Major Leweni says the visit was necessary because of events which have unfolded in recent days, including the possible appointment of an officer facing court martial, Lt Col Baledrokadroka, as the next commissioner of prisons.

Major Leweni says the military will not tolerate such an appointment given the seriousness of the charges against the officer and will not release him.

The Land Force commander, Colonel Pita Driti, has warned that any appointment of Lt Col Baledrokadroka to be commissioner of prisons could be the prelude to high profile coup convicts being freed.
