Former Tuvalu PM quits parliament

13:37 pm on 26 August 2014

Tuvalu will have a by-election to replace a former prime minister, Willy Telavi, who has resigned from parliament.

The by-election in the Nanumea Island electorate will be held on September the 19th.

Reports from Tuvalu say it is not clear what prompted Mr Telavi to quit.

Last month, he was excused from the first sitting of the parliamentary session because of his ailing spouse.

Mr Telavi was first elected to parliament in 2006 and became the prime minister in December 2010.

He stayed in office until he was ousted in a vote of no confidence in 2013.
