The Supreme Court of Samoa has sentenced a man to nine years in prison for attacking his wife with a knife earlier this year.

He had been charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.

The Samoa Observer reported that the man had attacked the woman as she was heading into her office in central Apia.

When members of the public tried to intervene the man ran off and tried to kill himself under a bridge.

Both were admitted to hospital with serious injuries.
