Heavy rains in Wellington have led to fallen trees and multiple slips.

Wellington City Council said there are a few significant weather-related issues, including two slips on Glenmore Street and Hutchison Road.

A tree has also come down on Middleton Road near Johnsonville.

The council said contractors are on site and traffic management is in place.

It is urging people to travel to the conditions.

Meanwhile, an orange heavy rain warning has been issued for Westland and Nelson.

MetService said a low and associated fronts over the Tasman Sea are expected to move east from late tonight.

Heavy rain warnings and watches are in place for northern and western parts of the country, and strong wind watches are also in force for the upper North Island.

Westland, south of Otira, and Tasman, west of Motueka, could see peak rain of 15 to 25 millimetres an hour about the ranges.
