The road has been the site of 170 recorded accidents since 2008, leading to two deaths and 95 injuries.

Christchurch City Council today voted to reduce the speed limit along the road to 60km/h, where it previously varied between 70-100km/h. Lines prohibiting overtaking would also be painted.

Council transport operations manager Steffan Thomas said the changes were aimed at reducing accidents.

The upgrades are expected to cost $100,000 and will be reviewed in a year. Work begins on Tuesday.
