The 2005 US Open winner Michael Campbell says a year ago he was ready to give up golf altogther.

Campbell is back in New Zealand for the New Zealand Open which tees off tomorrow morning at Clearwater near Christchurch.

Campbell won the tournament in 2000 at Paraparumu and will play alongside another previous winner David Smail and New Zealand's leading amateur Ryan Fox in the opening round.

While Campbell's world ranking has slumped to 731 he says he's in a much better frame of mind now that he's working with Australian coach Gary Edwin.

Campbell says he was ready to give up the sport before taking Edwin on as his coach and now that he's remodelled his swing is feeling much better about his game.

Campbell will be among 50 New Zealanders competing in the 144 strong field.
