New political party being planned in Fiji

09:02 am on 15 August 2007

A report from Fiji says moves are afoot to form a new political party to contest the post-coup general election.

The Daily Post says it is not clear who is behind the move.

But it says the exploratory work is being done by a former politician, a group of economists at the University of the South Pacific and some prominent members of society.

The names of the former prime minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, and the deposed opposition leader, Mick Beddoes, have been mentioned but Mr Beddoes says the new party is news to him.

Mr Beddoes says given the current political climate there is a likelihood of the emergence of a new political party just as the SDL emerged out of the interim administration after the 2000 coup.

The national director of the SDL party, Peceli Kinivuwai, says his information points to USP academics.

Mr Kinivuwai says he would welcome the formation of a new party saying it would be healthy for the political service of the people.

But, he says, it would be better for indigenous Fijians to stick with the SDL to maintain togetherness rather than be split.
