Labour promised to make te reo compulsory in primary schools by 2025 and wants to increase Māori teaching in this term.

Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta said she wanted to start by increasing the number of Māori language teachers.

She said work needed to start now to meet the 2025 goal.

"I think we could do this within a reasonable timeframe, certainly we'll see some inroads in this term of government around the teaching aspects of it and certainly at the primary school level.

"And integrating history into the curriculum is something that we're committed to as well."
