CNMI governor extends power emergency

14:25 pm on 2 February 2009

For the seventh month in a row, the Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Benigno Fitial, has signed an order placing the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation under a state of disaster emergency.

The Governor detailed new issues that he said justified the need for the latest 30-day declaration.

The order said the declaration was still necessary to protect the health and safety of children, senior citizens, businesses, and all other CNMI residents and visitors.

The governor's Press Secretary, Charles Reyes, has said the CUC will most likely remain under a state of emergency as long as the emergency Aggreko generators are in place.
