Protesters in Auckland's Aotea Square say they can live in harmony beside Rugby World Cup revellers if the area is used for a fan zone.

The Rugby World Cup authority is considering an Auckland Council application to use the square as a back-up fan zone if the waterfront gets crowded.

About 100 people have been camping in the square since Saturday as part of a global protest against uneven distribution of wealth.

At a hearing on Thursday, two said they would be happy to share the square and watch the rugby games on big screens with the fans.

However, one asked that portaloos be kept away from their tents.
