National Fieldays Society general manager steps down

07:20 am on 12 September 2011

The man who has managed the country's biggest agricultural event for the past 20 years has stepped down.

Barry Quayle has resigned as the general manager of the National Fieldays Society.

He says he is pleased to pass the business on in such a strong position, so it can be expanded further.

Mr Quayle says one of his career highlights was launching the country's first events centre at Mystery Creek, near Hamilton, where the national fieldays is held each year.

He says many major events were held there for the first five years until other event centres were developed around New Zealand.

Mr Quayle says another highlight was changing the focus of fieldays from being a very large national event to a "super-sized international event".

He says it used to be that fewer than 23% of those attending fieldays were women, but now between 45 to 50% of those who attend are women.

Mr Quayle finishes up at the end of October, but will remain as a director of a subsidiary of the Fieldays Society, which specialises in event access management and ticketing.
