A Waitakere city councillor says his community will lose out financially if organisers of the Auckland Arms Fair take the event elsewhere.
The city's mayor, Bob Harvey, wants to ban the long-standing gun and weapons show, saying it out of keeping with the promotion of Waitakere as a city for peace.
It was last held in March at the council-owned West Wave Recreation Centre.
Mr Harvey says the fair - considered New Zealand's largest sale of antique, collectable and modern arms - is inappropriate for Waitakere given the city's current crime rate.
However, one of his councillors, Assid Corban, says Mr Harvey is ignoring the benefits associated with the event.
