Council taking action over dusty roads

12:50 pm on 18 November 2014

The Far North Council is to tackle the dust problem on country roads used by log trucks.

It's planning to spend $2.7 million sealing 100 metre stretches of gravel road for outside the worst-affected homes.

Residents in rural parts of the Far North and Whangarei have been protesting for over a year about the nuisance and health risks caused by dust clouds stirred up by the big logging trucks.

The council plans to seal parts of Pipiwai Road, Picadilly Road and Diggers Valley Road.

But it says the programme is dependent on a $500,000 subsidy from the forestry sector and if that's not forthcoming the work will be scaled back.
