Fiji dismisses rumours surrounding Teleni resignation

15:30 pm on 26 August 2010

Fiji's interim government is denying that rumours surrounding the Police Commissioner have led to his resignation.

Commodore Esala Teleni resigned yesterday saying it is now time for him to consider further career opportunities.

Earlier this month the editor of Fijilive was taken in for questioning over a report alleging Commodore Teleni had been arrested.

Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Information Sharon Smith Johns says it was a personal decision for the Police Commissioner to resign.

"Look I think there's been a lot of rumours going around in the last two weeks and we can't deal in speculation, only in fact. The Police Commissioner wasn't arrested. There's been so much speculation into a lot of the senior staff in government, that we can't really deal in speculation."

Sharon Smith Johns says the Deputy Police Commissioner Joeli Baleilevuka will be standing in as Acting Commissioner until a replacement is found.
