Sir Jack Harris dies, aged 103

Prominent businessman and civic leader Sir Jack Harris has died at a rest-home near Porirua. He was 103.

Born in London in 1906, Jack Wolfram Ashford Harris was sent from Britain to Wellington in 1929 to help look after the family business, the import and wholesale firm Bing Harris.

Sir Jack, who inherited his title in 1952, helped run the Save Manapouri campaign in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

He was also a president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

In 2007 he became New Zealand's oldest first-time author when he published Memoirs of a Century.

Sir Jack, whose wife Lady Patricia Harris died in 2003, is survived by three children. His memorial service will be held at the Waikanae Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday.
