Passengers on an early morning train from the Kāpiti Coast this morning were shocked but unhurt after a tree caught in a landslide hit a unit between Plimmerton and Pukerua Bay.
A Metlink spokesperson said the small tree made a loud thud when it hit the 5am service from Waikanae.
The unit was checked at the scene and the train returned to Plimmerton, where passengers' welfare was checked before they were put on a bus for Wellington.
The slip has closed the train line between Paekākāriki and Porirua north of Wellington.
Metlink said services continued to run half-hourly between Wellington and the Kāpiti Coast, with buses shuttling between Paekākāriki and Porirua.
However, with only limited seats available, people are urged to seek alternative transport.
