Auckland Transport says KiwiRail has tarnished the reputation of the city's train system after 34 services were cancelled because the tracks were too hot.

The Southern line to Papakura was worst affected, registering 48 degrees.

Heat restrictions are temporarily applied to tracks that reach 40 degrees and above, due to the risk of track expansion in the heat.

Auckland Transport's public transport director, Stacey van der Putten, admits that Aucklanders deserve better.

KiwiRail's David Gordon spoke to Corin Dann.
