A police investigation is under way after a person was shot in the torso during a clash between two groups in Palmerston North on Sunday afternoon.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thompson said both groups arrived shortly before the confrontation began on Brentwood Avenue, Highbury, about 4.30pm.
"We are aware they left Brentwood Avenue at high speed, overtaking vehicles and driving dangerously," Thompson said.
Police believe some members of the public pulled their vehicles over and may have witnessed the incident.
Police are keen to speak to them.
The victim is reportedly in a critical but stable condition in Auckland Hospital.
Thompson said while members of the local community are upset at the incident, police do not believe there is any risk to the public.
