The second day of the first cricket test at Hagley Oval has belonged to New Zealand.

Sri Lanka has ended the day on 84 without loss in their second innings... trailling the Black Caps by 219 runs.

Dimuth Karunaratne is on 49 and Kaushal Silva 33.

Sri Lanka was forced to follow-on after being bowled out in its first innings for 138.... 303 runs behind New Zealand's first innings of 441.

Trent Boult ripped through the top of the Sri Lankan first innings, reducing the tourists to 15 for 3 in 9 overs.

Trent Boult had figures of 11 overs, 3 for 25..... Neil Wagner had 11 overs 3 for 60.... Tim Southee 12 overs 2 for 17 and Jimmy Neesham 6.4 overs 2 for 28.

Captain Angelo Mathews made 50 in the Sri Lankan innings.

Earlier New Zealand was dismissed in its first innings for 441, adding just 12 runs on the second morning.

Tim Southee was dismissed for no score, Neil Wagner for 4 and Boult for no score.

Mark Craig was unbeaten on 12.

Suranga Lakmal and Angelo Mathews took 3 wickets each.

The second and final test is at the Basin Reserve starting on January third.
