Dengue cases in Pacific being closely monitored by SPC

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community believes a surge in recent cases of dengue in the region could be attributed to a serial form of the virus that hasn't been seen for two decades.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne seasonal infection caused by four closely related viruses, and symptoms include sudden high fever, rash, muscle and joint pain.

Palau is the latest, with 290 cases recorded for the first six months of this year, and of those, there were 106 cases for the month of June.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community is closely monitoring countries reporting high numbers of dengue.

Its acting deputy director for Public Health, Dr Salanieta Saketa, told Sara Vui-Talitu how the region is faring in their efforts to combat its spread.
