Tahoeraa politician says French Polynesian shake-up yet to be completed

12:32 pm on 8 April 2009

The French Polynesian assembly president, Edouard Fritch, says he considers that negotiations are still ongoing as reports suggest that his Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party has been left out of a new powersharing deal.

The opposition To Tatou Aia says it has sided with President Oscar Temaru to form a new coalition, ending the Tahoeraa's role in the executive.

But Mr Fritch, who is the party's number two, says nothing is decided until the ballot papers are counted - an apparent reference to the election of the assembly president later this week.

The Tahoeraa is to meet tonight to discuss the political situation which Mr Fritch says is fast moving.

There has been pressure on the Tahoeraa to weaken its leader, Gaston Flosse, if it wants to remain included in the ruling coalition.

Should the realignment reported by the opposition be confirmed, the Tahoeraa would be consigned to become an opposition with less than a quarter of the assembly's backing.
