Highway south of Kaikōura closed

17:25 pm on 7 March 2017

State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura will not re-open until tomorrow morning, due to poor weather conditions.

The earthquake-damaged road was closed this morning between Goose Bay and Peketa due to wet weather and the increased rockfall risk, and drivers have been told to take the inland route.

The stretch of SH1 was re-opened in December after huge slips brought down by November's 7.8 earthquake were cleared.

The NZ Transport Agency hoped to reopen the highway after 8.30am tomorrow.

The highway north of Kaikōura remains closed.
