A former bailiff in French Polynesia has been detained for alleged drug trafficking.

According to media reports, Patrick Rey, who was a judicial official in Moorea, is suspected of having sponsored one of the people recently arrested for trying to smuggle methamphetamine into Tahiti.

The drugs were found in the luggage of a passenger who arrived from Los Angeles.

Subsequently, two residents were detained suspected to be linked to the drug import.

Reports said Mr Rey's partner had also been charged in connection with the case but been released from detention
