16:42 pm on 28 January 2008

A depression that is looming near Fiji has just been declared a tropical cyclone and named Gene by the Nadi Weather Office.

People living in low lying areas are being warned to take precaution as heavy rainfall is predicted for today, which could cause flash flooding.

Duty Weather forecasters say the category 1 tropical cyclone was located 20km West-North-West of Cikobia earier this morning.

The system is moving South-West at 15 kilometres per hour.

Meanwhile, businesses and government offices in Samoa's capital Apia have been cleaning up after heavy rainfall over the weekend put their premises under water.

The downpours were caused by the low pressure system that is now affecting Fiji.

The Samoa Metreological Service says 108 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in a 12 hour period, the highest ever.
