Bulk feed shipments being unloaded

Port of Tauranga is unloading the final bulk feed shipment to arrive there from the South Island.

A further shipment is being unloaded at the Port of Napier on Thursday and there will be one last delivery there next month.

That will wrap up the emergency feed shipments for drought afflicted North Island farms, organised by Federated Farmers with the help of shipping companies and rural contractors.

Federated Farmers said it's been a life saver for farmers in Bay of Plenty and further afield.

Bay of Plenty president John Scrimgeour estimates that more than 100,000 small bale equivalents of rye-grass and barley straw have been landed in Tauranga in the past six week,.

Drought committee representative Kevin Mitchell said the feed shipment being unloaded at Napier will go straight to the farmers who have ordered it .

He said the mainly rye-grass straw is high quality feed, equivalent to meadow hay, and has been a huge boost on parched Hawke's Bay farms.

Mr Mitchell said most of the feed has gone to farms in central Hawke's Bay and under the ranges, where they still need a lot more rain to break the drought.
