Obama to make statement on Afghan war

11:21 am on 13 December 2010

The White House says President Barack Obama will make a statement on Thursday about a review of the United States' war strategy in Afghanistan.

Mr Obama ordered the review after dispatching 30,000 more American troops to help thwart the Taliban.

However, US officials have cautioned that the review will not lead to any major changes in strategy.

Mr Obama has pledged to start bringing US troops home from next July and begin handing security responsibility to Afghans.

NATO leaders agreed at a summit in Lisbon last month to end combat operations and give security enforcement to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.
