The United States Government says it could cost up to $US900 million for a new hospital in American Samoa.
The US Army Corps of Engineers has looked at the state of the LBJ hospital, and estimated, for the US Congress, the cost of renovating and modernising it or constructing a new facility, bearing in mind the territory's long-term needs.
The LBJ is the only medical centre in American Samoa.
According to the 278-page report, the LBJ is in a state of failure due to age, environmental exposure, and lack of preventative maintenance.
The $US900 million quote is for a multi-level hospital of 370,000 square feet, which is the territorial government's preferred option.
