Cyclone Winston to miss New Zealand

11:40 am on 24 February 2016

The chance of Cyclone Winston missing New Zealand is diminishing, the MetService says.

The tropical cyclone killed at least 29 people at the weekend when it barrelled through Fiji, destroying houses, crops and infrastructure.

Meteorologist Lisa Murray said there was a higher chance of it heading towards the Coral Sea than of heading towards New Zealand.

It would be considered a low, not a tropical cyclone, if it did reach New Zealand, she said.
