11:01 am on 21 January 2008

American Samoa's LBJ Medical Centre says, in a report to the governor, that there is a documented shortage of registered nurses at the hospital.

It also says the shortage was clearly identified by a recent audit by the U.S. Center for Medicaid and Medicare Service (CMS).

The CMS report says it is imperative that the nursing shortage be addressed

The Medical Centre says it has started recruiting off-island with six nurses hired from the Philippines.

The first nurse from the Philippines started working in July.
